On this date 114 years ago, alarms rang in the New York State Capitol. A fire started in the Assembly Library & quickly spread to the New York State Library. The cause of the fire still officially remains unknown, although faulty & outdated wiring were blamed. Learn more at the link in the comments.

DYK: Benjamin Franklin visited Albany at least twice. Once for the Albany Congress in 1754 when the Albany Plan of Union, proposed and written by Franklin, was adopted. Then, in 1776, Franklin was a guest of Gen. Schuyler. Today, on Franklin's birthday, visit his portrait carving at the Capitol.

New York’s first Capitol building was designed by Philip Hooker (whose birthday is today). He was an Albany native and the pre-eminent architect of this area at the time. The former Capitol was taken down in 1883. Today, a marker on the ground in East Capitol Park denotes the original entrance.
